Game Notes: 2/22/08 v. Houston Aeros

Crunch Come Up Short in Shootout

Syracuse, NY (February 22, 2008) --
The Houston Aeros scored three unanswered goals to force overtime and then netted two more in a shootout to pull out a 5-4 win over the Syracuse Crunch Friday at the Onondaga County War Memorial.

Syracuse came out on the short-end of the scoresheet but the Crunch took advantage of being shorthanded in the first period.

Joakim Lindstrom blistered a shot that went in and out of the net so fast that play continued until the next stoppage when referee Chris Cozzan and linesmen Tim Kotyra and Dan Murphy huddled and eventually awarded the goal.

Derek MacKenzie and Mark Rycroft teamed up on the penalty kill four minutes later with MacKenzie netting the shortie. It was the fifth shorthanded goal of the year for MacKenzie, tying him for third in the league with teammate Adam Pineault. Syracuse leads the league in shorthanded goals with 17.

Peter Olvecky was able to get behind the Syracuse defense, and with Adrian foster screening goalie Dan LaCosta, Olvecky picked the short corner to cut the Crunch lead to 2-1.

Syracuse went up by three on goals by Pineault and Derek Dorsett, but 57 seconds later the Syracuse defense made a costly turnover in front of LaCosta and Joel Ward fired the puck into a open net to pull the Aeros back to within two.

In the third it was all Houston as Clayton Stoner cut the lead to one five minutes into the period and Benoit Pouliot forced overtime nearly four-minutes later with the Aeros second power play goal of the game.

In the overtime Syracuse had the best scoring chances but Aeros' goalie Barry Brust had brushed off the rust from the first two periods and kept Syracuse from pulling out the win.

In the shootout, Brust stoned all four of the Crunch shooters while Pouliot repeated his third-period effort for the game-winner.

Houston fired a lot of rubber at LaCosta with 47 shots including 17 in the second and 16 more in the third.

There was good news and bad news with regards to the Syracuse position in the standings. Hamilton was idle and Grand Rapids lost to Manitoba, but Syracuse lost ground on Manitoba as the Moose earned two points for its 4-1 win while Syracuse earned one point for the shootout loss.
