Crunch Outlast Hershey in Shootout
Syracuse, NY (November 18,2011) – Iiro Tarkki delivered for the Crunch once again, making 39 saves and securing a 3-2 shootout victory against the Hershey Bears tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Boyd Kane slipped one past Tarkki 24 seconds into the game helping the Bears to an early 1-0 lead. Kane's goal was assisted by Chris Bourque and Julien Brouillette.
Four minutes later, Dmitry Orlov was sent to the box for tripping, putting the Crunch on their first power play of the night.
Patrick Maroon capitalized on the opportunity and tipped a
Bryan Rodney shot from the point past Dany Sabourin to the game up at one at 4:16 of the first period.
Mathieu Carle earned the second assist on the play.
Jacob Micflikier took back the lead for the Bears with a goal at the 9:30 mark of the opening frame, assisted by Graham Mink and Christian Hanson.
At the 8:28 mark of the second period, the Crunch went on their third power play of the game after Kane was sent to the box for slashing. On the power play, Carle fired one top shelf the even the score at two.
Kyle Palmieri and
Nick Bonino earned the assists on the tally.
“Once I saw that pass coming across, I knew Palmieri saw me,” said Carle. “I knew he was going to give it me, and when I got the puck I decided to shoot.”
The score remained tied at 2-2 until the Crunch drew a cross-checking penalty from Kane at 13:15 in the third. Halfway through the power play the Crunch drew a second penalty off of the Bears' Zach Miskovic also for cross-checking. The Crunch were unable to convert on the 5-on-3 power play, sending the game into overtime.
Both teams were unable to score in the extra frame, resulting in a game-ending shootout. In the shootout, Palmieri and Maroon scored, while Tarkki secured the Crunch's two points by stopping all four Hershey shooters he faced.
