Crunch Top Monsters, 2-1, For First Win of the Season

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse Crunch earned their first win of the season in a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Monsters tonight at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Alex Barre-Boulet opened scoring before Peter Abbandonato tallied his first professional goal to move the Crunch to 1-0-1-0 on the season.

Scott Wedgewood recorded his first win in his first start for the Crunch turning aside 31-of-32 shots. Matiss Kivlenieks stopped 22-of-24 between the pipes for the Monsters. Syracuse converted on 1-of-3 power play opportunities while going a perfect 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

The Crunch got on the board halfway through the first period. Cameron Gaunce passed the puck along the blue line for Luke Schenn to fire from the right point. Barre-Boulet tipped the shot into the back of the net while screening Kivlenieks down low.

Syracuse doubled their lead on the power play just 1:24 into the middle stanza. After some tic-tac-toe passing from Cal Foote and Ross Colton, the puck got dished over for Abbandonato to send home from the right wing.

The Monsters stole one back at the 12:59 mark when Adam Clendening capitalized on a turnover with a quick shot from the top of the right circle. Sam Vigneault got a stick on it and redirected it past Wedgewood.

Syracuse maintained momentum and held on to their 2-1 lead through a scoreless third period.

The Crunch and Monsters finish the second half of the weekend series tomorrow at 7 p.m.
