Last time out
Syracuse fell to St. John's, 6-2, Tuesday at Mile One Centre in St. John's, the team's third consecutive loss. The Crunch were outshot 47-15, the most lopsided margin of shots this year by a wide margin. The 47 shots for the IceCaps were most against Syracuse this year and one shy of a St. John's record. The Crunch managed only four shots in the first, five in the second and six in the third for a season-worst 15. Syracuse also racked up a season-high 63 penalty minutes, thanks to three fights and three misconducts.
A Crunch netminder was chased for the first itme this season as
Kristers Gudlevskis allowed four goals on 20 shots, including the last two in the span of 12 seconds seven minutes into the second period, before
Cedrick Desjardins came on, finishing with 25 stops on 27 shots in relief.
Mike Angelidis and
Cedric Paquette did the scoring for Syracuse. Paquette, Max Parent and
Dmitry Korobov garnered assists. IceCaps goalie Jussi Olkinuora made 13 saves for his third win in six appearances.
St. John's had 14 players mark the score sheet, including a game-high three points for defenseman Zach Redmond who assisted on goals one, four and five. Ryan Schnell was the game's first star, scoring his first goal with the IceCaps, the nail that drove Gudlevskis from the game in the second; he also fought
Eric Neilson in the first period. Jason Jaffray opened the scoring with his eighth of the year, potting a power-play goal on St. John's first chance of the night, only the fourth Syracuse allowed on the road this year. Kris Fredheim had St. John's second power-play maker in the second, the eventual game-winning goal.
Gordie Howe hat trick for Paquette
Cedric Paquette assisted on
Mike Angelidis's first-period score and scored a third-period goal of his own Tuesday for his third multi-point game of the season. Getting into a fight with Adam Lowry (who had crosschecked
Brett Connolly) with five minutes left in the game, the rookie recorded his first Gordie Howe hat trick. Paquette now has seven points in the last five games and is the leading scorer among available Crunch players with 13 points (7g, 6a). He also has 50 penalty minutes, third most on the Crunch, including three fights.
Scouting the IceCaps
The IceCaps evened the season series with Syracuse Friday with their 6-2 victory over the Crunch. After trading shutouts with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last weekend at Mike One Centre, St. John's looks for its first home two-game sweep of the season. The only time St. John's has won consecutive home games this year was Oct. 5 and 18, but as part of two separate homsetands with two road games in between.
IceCaps scoring leader Eric O'Dell was one of only four skaters held off the score sheet Tuesday vs. Syracuse, but still leads the team with 24 points (11g, 13a). Left wingers Kael Mouillierat (5g-16a-21pts) and Jason Jaffrey (8g-10a-18pts) had one point each Tuesday and are second and third on the IceCaps scoring list.
Jussi Olkinuora earned the win vs. Syracuse Tuesday, but Eddie Pasquale carried the load for St. John's, racking up more minutes and shots against than any other AHL goalie this season. In 20 games for the IceCaps this season Pasquale has a 10-9-1 record with a 2.30 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage. He earned his first shutout of the season Friday against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, making 20 saves in a 5-0 win. He surrendered three goals on 33 shots in the loss to the Crunch Nov. 29.
Special Teams
Syracuse's road penalty kill remains best in the AHL despite allowing two goals in seven chances against St. John's Tuesday. The Crunch are at 90.2% (46-for-51) on the road but they are 21st overall at 80.6%, having allowed five power-play goals during their recent three-game skid.
Syracuse's power play has scored zero goals on 12 chances during their three-game losing streak and has sunk to 14th in the league at 18.0% (20-for-111). The Crunch has only four power-play goals since Nov. 15 (10 games) and hasn't scored two or more power-play goals in a game since Nov. 1 (the last 14 games), a feat accomplished four times in Syracuse's first nine games.
The IceCaps are one of three teams in the AHL's top ten in penalty kill and power play situations. WIth a 3-for-3 penalty kill and 2-for-7 power play last night vs. Syracuse, St. John's remains sixth with the man advantage (21.5%) and ninth with a man down (84.2%)
