SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â The Syracuse Crunch (3-2-1-0) fell to the Portland Pirates (2-4-0-0) 2-1 tonight at the Cross Insurance Arena.
The loss snaps a three-game win streak and four-game point streak for the Crunch. Syracuse goaltender
Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 30 of 32 shots in this third start of the season, his Pirates counterpart Louis Domingue made 20 saves on 21 shots.
The Pirates jumped out to a two-goal lead with a pair of shorthanded tallies from right wing Tobias Rieder. Rieder's first shorthanded goal came 7:23 into the contest. Rieder finished a two-on-one rush by beating Vasilevskiy stick side, assisted by Jordan Martinook. Another shorthanded rush led to Rieder's second goal of the game 6:53 into the second period. Rieder scored after being set up by Alexandre Bolduc at the end of a three-on-one rush.
Cody Kuynk cut the Pirates lead to 2-1 with his first professional goal at the 8:38 mark of the final frame. Kuynk's shot from the left wing was assisted by
Jerome Samson and
Jake Dotchin. The secondary assist is Dotchin's first professional point.
The Crunch will conclude their first three-in-three of the season Sunday in Springfield at 3 p.m.
