Crunch stumble in 5-1 loss to Falcons

SPR 5, SYR 1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse Crunch (3-3-1-0) concluded their first three-in-three of the season with a 5-1 loss to the Springfield Falcons (3-3-1-0) on Sunday at MassMutual Center.

Crunch netminder Kristers Gudlevskis allowed five goals on 30 shots in his second loss of the season. Falcons goaltender Oscar Dansk made 35 stops on 36 shots. Syracuse was scoreless in six power-play attempts and allowed one power-play goal on two Springfield chances.

The Falcons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead less than halfway through the opening frame. Austin Madaisky opened the scoring 19 seconds into the contest by capitalizing on a Springfield offensive zone faceoff with a blast from the far point, assisted by Brian Gibbons.

Sean Collins added to the Falcons lead with a power-play goal four minutes into the period. After a Ryan Craig centering pass from behind the goal line, Collins knocked a Gibbons shot past Gudlevskis for the two-goal lead.

Kerby Rychel capped the first period scoring at the 8:32 mark, assisted by Lukas Sedlak and Collins. Gudlevskis was sprawled on the ice after making an initial save before a flurry in front of the net resulted in Rychel's second goal of the season.

T.J. Tynan extended the Falcons lead to 4-0 13:32 into the second period. Gudlevskis turned aside an initial shot by Hubert Labrie but the rebound found the stick of Tynan who pushed the puck past Gudlevskis. Josh Anderson picked up the secondary assist on the play.

Joel Vermin put the Crunch on the scoreboard 2:32 into the final frame. Vermin's goal was set up by Jonathan Marchessault winning a faceoff in the Crunch offensive zone. The faceoff was won to Blunden who shoveled the puck to Vermin in the high slot.

The Falcons regained their four-goal lead 7:19 into the third when Domenic Monardo got behind the Crunch defense and scored on an unassisted breakaway.

The Crunch's next game will be Friday, Oct. 31 when they host the Rochester Americans at the War Memorial Arena.

CRUNCHABLES: Forwards Mike Blunden and Jonathan Marchessault both returned to the lineup after appearing in Tampa Bay's 7-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Saturday…Five goals allowed is a season high for the Crunch…
