SYRACUSE, N.Y. –
Gabriel Dumont netted the game-winner in overtime to defeat the St. John's IceCaps, 2-1, and advance the Syracuse Crunch to Round 2 of the Calder Cup Playoffs tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Erik Condra put the Crunch on track with a power-play goal late in the first period. The Crunch held on through the final frame when the IceCaps evened the score and forced overtime. Dumont found the back of the net just 2:18 into the overtime period to give Syracuse the series, 3-1.
Mike McKenna was tested between the pipes, but came out with his third post-season victory following 26 saves. Charlie Lindgren stopped 23-of-25 in net for the IceCaps. Syracuse went 1-for-5 on the power play and 6-for-7 for the penalty kill.
The Crunch opened scoring with a power-play marker at the 16:41 mark of the first period.
Matthew Peca sent the puck to the goal post for
Tye McGinn to quickly redirect into the slot. Condra was on the doorstep and one-timed his second in as many games.
With 5:33 remaining in regulation, the IceCaps tied it up. Stefan Matteau received the puck while cutting across the slot and beat McKenna blocker side. Assists went to Daniel Audette and Jacob de la Rose.
For the second time in the series, the teams went into overtime. Just two minutes into the extra frame, Dumont chipped in
Byron Froese's backhand feed from behind the cage.
Adam Erne earned a point with the secondary assist on the game-winner.
