One-way contract: A one-way contract grants a player a set amount of money for the entire year. If a player is a signed to a one-way contract and clears waivers (if necessary) to play in the AHL, he continues to earn the same amount of money.

Two-way contract: A two-way contract associates two different salaries with a player, depending on if he is playing in the NHL or the AHL. Waiver rules still apply to players on two-way contracts, but if they do clear waivers to play in the AHL, their salary adjusts accordingly.

Waivers: When a player is reassigned from the NHL to the AHL, they must pass through waivers, unless that player is exempt. Waivers allow any of the other teams to claim the rights of that player before that player may join the AHL affiliate. Players are exempt based on their age, years from signing an NHL contract and/or NHL games played per terms in the NHL CBA.

If a player is recalled, he does not need to pass through waivers again if the player has not played in ten (10) or more cumulative NHL games and has not been on an NHL active roster for more than thirty (30) days cumulative since last clearing waivers. A player that consents to a conditioning loan does not need to pass through waivers if the loan does not exceed 14 days.

Entry-level contract: Players younger than 25 years of age as of Sept. 15 of their first NHL contract sign entry-level contracts. All entry-level contracts are two-way contracts and have a maximum salary of $950,000. The length of the contract depends on the player's age upon signing. Entry-level contracts are three years for players 18 to 21 years of age, two years for players 22 to 23 and one year for 24 years of age.

AHL contract: A player signed to an AHL contract is only eligible to play in the AHL or ECHL. If the NHL affiliate wanted to call him up, he must first sign an NHL contract. Players on AHL contracts are loaned to other teams by the AHL club, as opposed to players on NHL contracts who are assigned/reassigned/recalled by the NHL team.

UFA (Unrestricted Free Agent): Unrestricted free agents are eligible to negotiate with any team and any club is free to offer a standard player's contract to a UFA. Most commonly, players reach this status if they are 27 years of age or older by June 30 or if they have accrued seven professional seasons.

RFA (Restricted Free Agent): Restricted free agents cannot negotiate contracts with other teams until their previous clubs fail to provide a qualifying offer by the day following the NHL Draft. If a team does not issue a qualifying offer, the player becomes a UFA on July 1 and can openly negotiate with other clubs.

Qualifying Offer: By issuing qualifying offers, teams are given the right of first refusal or draft choice compensation should the player sign an offer sheet with another team. If the player rejects a qualifying offer, he remains a RFA. If a team does not offer a RFA a qualifying offer, that player becomes a UFA.

AHL Eligible: Players drafted and playing for Canadian Hockey League teams (OHL, WHL, QMJHL) are ineligible to play in the AHL or ECHL until they are 20 years old (by Dec. 31 of that year) or have completed four years in juniors. European players who are not drafted, but choose to play for a CHL team post-NHL Draft may report to that NHL team's AHL affiliate before the age limit. Players must be 18 on or before Sept. 15 of each season of competition to compete in the AHL.
