He had been a volunteer assistant coach with his alma mater, the University of North Dakota, for seven seasons, starting in 2010. During his time as an assistant coach at North Dakota, the university made four Frozen Four appearances (2011, 2014, 2015, 2016) and won one National Championship (2016). Under his tutelage, Zane McIntyre won the Mike Richter Award as the NCAA’s top goaltender, in 2014-15.

He holds the program record for wins (80), winning percentage (.756) and shutouts (15).

Goehring replaced David Alexander, who took a similar position with the NHL’s St. Louis Blues.
