Crunch edged 4-3 by Admirals in shootout

4-3 Loss

Syracuse, NY – The Syracuse Crunch were edged by the Norfolk Admirals 4-3 in a shootout tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
 
The loss drops the Crunch to 11-7-1-2 on the regular season and 2-0-0-1 in the season series with the Admirals.
 
Crunch goaltender Cedrick Desjardins stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced in the defeat. Admirals' goaltender John Gibson stopped six of the nine shots he faced before Brad Thiessen relieved him at the 10:36 mark of second period.
 
Drew Olson gave the Crunch a 1-0 lead over the Admirals just 3:23 into the first frame. Olson took a slap shot from the top of the right circle that powered past Gibson on the stick side. Cedric Paquette was credited with the assist.
 
Mike Angelidis extended the Crunch's lead at the 14:56 mark of the first when he took a pass from Paquette and skated past an Admirals defender to face Gibson on his own. Angelidis flipped the puck into the back of the net, giving Syracuse a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.
 
The Crunch added one more to their tally when Brett Connolly fired from the slot off a pass from Dmitry Korobov at the 7:13 mark of the second period. Luke Witkowski had the secondary assist. The Admirals responded with a five-on-three power-play goal by Rickard Rakell at the 9:52 mark. The Crunch went into the second intermission leading the Admirals 3-1.
 
Norfolk scored two goals early in the third period to tie Syracuse 3-3. Steven Whitney scored a power-play goal 2:21 into the third. Chad Painchaud tied the game at three with a goal at the 6:19 mark of the third. The Crunch and Admirals ended regulation tied at three. After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout.
 
In the shootout, Connolly scored on Thiessen in the second round, but Rackell immediately followed with a goal. Charles Sarault scored the game-winner for the Admirals during the fourth round.
 
The Crunch take on the Admirals again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at the War Memorial Arena.
