PLAYOFF REMATCH PITS CRUNCH AND MARLIES
Â
Tonight, the Syracuse Crunch (21-9-2-0) host the Toronto Marlies (16-13-3-2) at the War Memorial for the first time this season. It's the first meeting in Central New York between the two clubs since Toronto's 2-1 road victory to sweep the North Division Finals on May 8 last spring.  Â
Â
LAST TIME OUT
Â
The Crunch took down the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 3-1, last night at the War Memorial Arena.
Â
Syracuse extended its home win streak to four games with the victory behind 19 saves from goalie
Eddie Pasquale.
Â
The Crunch scored 12:26 into the first period on the man advantage, as Alex Barré-Boulet slipped one through goalie Christopher Gibson from beneath the right circle. The goal marked the 21-year-old's league-leading 11th power play-goal.
Â
Alex Volkov scored a breakaway goal at 4:40 of the second period to put the Crunch up 2-0. Volkov pulled the puck to his forehand and rolled it in for his eighth goal of the season. Then in the third,
Carter Verhaeghe danced through the slot and scored on a nifty backhander for a 3-0 lead.
Â
Bridgeport finally found the back of the net about midway through the final period on a goal from Otto Koivula, but Syracuse held on to pick up a 3-1 victory.
Â
SCOUTING THE CRUNCHÂ
Â
Syracuse (21-9-2-0, 44 points) ranks second in the North Division just behind the Rochester Americans (46 points), but the Crunch own the best points percentage (0.688) with three games in hand. Â
"He's crafty and he's very intelligent," said head coach Ben Groulx. "I think with a one-man advantage and more room out there, he knows how to play that sequence of the game. That's probably why he's one of the best."
The 21-year-old forward is also tied for the top spot among all AHL rookies with 33 points (16g, 17a). In his first professional season, Barré-Boulet leads the Crunch with 16 goals and ranks third in scoring. Â
With a goal and an assist last night,
Carter Verhaeghe now has 12 multi-point performances, which is a regular season career high. Last season, the Toronto native recorded 11 multi-point games in 58 appearances; this season it has taken him just 32 games to surpass that total.
Mathieu Joseph led the Crunch with 12 multi-point efforts in 70 appearances last season. In his second season with the Crunch, Verhaeghe leads the team in scoring with 38 points (14g, 24a) and ranks fourth among all AHL skaters.
