Mired in a three-game losing skid, the Crunch begin Week 22 still tied with Springfield for first place in the Eastern Conference with 75 points at 34-16-3-4. The Crunch also own the AHL's top road record at 21-7-0-2.
Scouting Report
The Marlies are led by left wing Ryan Hamilton (23g-13a-36pts), center Joe Colborne (9g-22a-31pts), and defenseman Jake Gardiner (10g-16a-26pts). Three goalies have seen action for Toronto in the past eight games. Drew MacIntyre has played in five of the last eight games, and has won his last two starts, saving 55 of 57 shots and earning CCM/AHL Player of the Week honors. Mark Owuya played in goal for the Marlies against the Crunch and picked up the shootout loss after giving up three goals with 32 saves.
For the Crunch, seven players recorded a point in the win against the Marlies, and only
Ondrej Palat had more than one point.
Riku Helenius got the win in net for Syracuse against Toronto, his first shootout game of the season, stopping three of five shooters.
Last Meeting: Feb. 20
The Crunch never held a lead during a 4-3 shootout win over the Marlies Feb. 20. Toronto's Joe Colborne started the scoring when he tapped a rebound past Syracuse goalie
Riku Helenius with 0.4 seconds left in the first period. Less than three minutes into the second, Crunch captain
Mike Angelidis evened the game with a one-timer off an
Ondrej Palat feed that beat Marlies' goalie Mark Owuya. Colborne and Palat also tallied goals in the second to make the score 2-2 heading into the third period. Syracuse had to come back one more time. After Ryan Hamilton gave Toronto the lead in the third,
Dana Tyrell tied the game with a wraparound goal after an odd bounce gave him the puck behind the net. Palat,
Brett Connolly,
Radko Gudas converted shootout chances, while Helenius stopped three of five Marlies for a win in his first shootout. Syracuse is now 2-4 in shootouts.
